A week ago, February 28th, I turned 21 years old. I KNOW.
It’s the most hyped birthday that you’ll ever have.
Not that I didn’t have fun and enjoy myself, because I did. But it’s annoying that the standard for 21st birthdays is to get insanely drunk. Trust me, I know plenty of people who have done that – and I’ve obviously seen it all over social media. But that’s not really my style or my speed.
I started the day by finding a balloon tied to my chair at the table, and a small package waiting for me from my mom. I opened it find the most beautiful Pandora bracelet that I had been fawning over for probably a year now, along with a few beautiful charms. I obviously immediately put it on and have barely taken it off since. Then she surprised me again by pulling out a box of Krispy Kreme donuts – which are my all time favorite, but I never have them. After that, my best friend brought me Krispy Kreme donuts too! [I’m pretty sure I consumed more donuts last weekend than I have in the past year.]
After the breakfast festivities, and of course watching some One Tree Hill, I showered and got myself ready to go get my new license. I went down to the DMV and got my photo taken and my new license, and I also registered to be a voter (which I had been meaning to do for a while). After that I came home and took a nap – before getting ready for the night! My darling sister also ordered flowers for me that got delivered as we were trying to leave to go to the DMV – and they are beautiful!
I got ready for the casino, and then drove to the dance studio to meet up with my mom who was taking me and my best friend. When I got there, my sister pulled a blindfold out of her pocket and told me to put it on. She drove me to PF Changs, where a bunch of my sorority sisters were waiting for me. I had a fantastic time, had one drink, and amazing food. It was a wonderful surprise, and I couldn’t have asked for better friends. After we were finished, my mom came and picked up my best friend and I and took us to the casino. I only came home $5 richer, but it was a blast.
But the thing I hated was the fact that every single person I ran into either that day, or the days following, asked me without a doubt, “Do you/did you have plans?!?!” with that look like they were saying “Did you get stupid drunk?!?!” – – – and every time I gave my tasteful response of “I had dinner with friends and went to the casino!”
Just shows you that not everyone wants that for their birthday, definitely not me. I had a WONDERFUL 21st Birthday with the help of my family and friends, and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
More juice later! – Jen
